Short Comedy Film Lab

Short Comedy Film Lab

A Practice-Based Intensive

A focused, practice-based lab where participants create a short comedy film from idea to final screening within one month.

The process is structured and guided throughout — from developing a clear comic idea, through shaping it into a simple, workable form, to filming and editing into a finished piece. The emphasis is on precision, timing, and execution.

The lab is led by Tom Ledan, filmmaker and director with over 20 years of experience across film, theatre, and performance training, specialising in structured, action-based approaches to storytelling.

Work is carried out using accessible tools, including phone cameras, keeping the focus on performance, structure, and rhythm.

Structure:

  • idea development and selection
  • concise script or action outline
  • filming
  • editing
  • final screening

Short inputs on key comedy principles (timing, contrast, escalation) are introduced only where they directly support the work.

Who it’s for:

Open to adults (18+). No prior experience is required.

You do not need acting experience, a sense of being “funny,” or even a strong level of English.

The work is collaborative — films are created together as a group, with space for different skills and levels.

Format:

Small group, weekly meetings

Duration:

5 sessions (3 hours each)
